Course Title: Occupational Health and Well-Being

Aims:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the history and philosophy of Occupational Therapy and current dominant models of practice in occupational therapy.
• Describe the main concepts of occupational science theory.
• Engage in the current discourse in occupational therapy relating theory to practice
• Understand how engagement in meaningful occupation contributes to health and well being.
• To understand the concepts of client centred practice, user involvement and empowerment and their role in supporting decision making, autonomy and community action

Course Title: Frames of reference and context of Occupational Therapy practice

• Demonstrate an understanding of the frames of reference in health and social care and how these impact on occupational therapy practice
• Understand and apply the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework to occupational therapy practice.
• Demonstrate the relevance of the Social Model of Disability in understanding barriers to occupational engagement.
• The impact of the social, physical and psychological environment on occupational performance
• Understand the principles of Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) and the potential of this approach in Sri Lanka

• Plan and implement stress management, anxiety management and anger management programmes
• Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of condition management and expert patient programmes with particular reference to cardiac rehabilitation and long term disabling conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, parkinson's disease and schizophrenia.

Course Title: Applied Occupational Therapy in Mental Health

Aims:

• To develop a greater understanding of the psychological theories and sociological perspectives which are of particular relevance to occupational therapy practice.

• To understand the impact of genetic, physiological, psychological, social, cultural and environmental factors on mental well being and the impact of common mental health conditions on occupational performance. Emphasis will be placed on developing knowledge and competencies in order to deliver a client centred service which supports an individuals' participation in the ordinary life of their society through engagement in occupation.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this module, the therapist will be able to;

1. Understand the main explanatory frameworks for the aetiology and treatment of mental illness and be able to support work within these frameworks e.g. biological, cognitive-behavioural, socio-cultural, stress-vulnerability.
2. Understand learning theories and their relevance to occupational therapy practice
3. Describe the development of identity and self esteem, the importance of this to physical and psychological well –being and how they, as OTs can support an individual's identity.
4. Identify the impact of care environments on health and social care practice and recognize institutionalizing practices.
5. Identify and describe a range of common mental health problems. They will be aware of aetiology, diagnosis and best practice in treatment with reference to DSM1V, ICD 10 and NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) guidelines.
6. Assess the impact of mental ill health on an individual's occupational performance and quality of life.
7. Develop appropriate interventions for people with mental health problems that minimize the impact of their illness and support engagement in a satisfying life.
8. Demonstrate an understanding and knowledge to identify the different categories of medications, including mechanisms of action and possible side effects to an individual's physical, mental and functional ability e.g., activities of daily living, ADL)
9. Support the client in taking necessary medications in order that it has optimum benefit and least disruption to their day-to-day life
10. Promote the health benefits of occupation and occupational therapy for someone with mental health problems
11. Discuss both the opportunities and barriers in providing effective occupational therapy services to people with mental health problems in Sri Lanka

By the end of this module, therapists will be able to;

• Describe and assess typical expectations in motor, cognitive, social, emotional and occupational development throughout childhood.
• Analyse the impact of delayed or atypical development on occupational performance.
• Plan appropriate interventions for children and adolescents with learning disabilities.
• Identify and discuss contextual and environmental factors including cultural, familial, personal, social and temporal aspects as they impact on areas of occupation in the context of development.
• Will be able to discuss both the opportunities and barriers and limitations in providing effective occupational therapy services to children with learning disabilities in Sri Lanka.
• Understand the dominant frames of practice in rehabilitation of individuals impacted by delayed development, atypical development and/or acquired neurological impairment e.g. sensory integration, neurodevelopmental, motor learning, constraint induced movement therapy.
• Develop and evaluate treatment programmes based on the above frames of practice.
• Identify challenges in the home, school and work environment and be able to provide advice on modifications and equipment to optimize occupational performance.
• Appreciate the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in rehabilitation.

Course Title: Research Project (Dissertation)

Aims:

Learning Outcomes:

• formulate a research question.
• conduct a focused literature search.
• write a critical literature review around their chosen topic.
• design a study.
• successfully apply for Ethics Committee approval.
• design tools which are needed in the study, pilot them, and refine them as appropriate.
• analyze their data and present results.
• use basic statistical methods to analyze data.
• write up results for publication in a scientific journal.
• prepare a poster presentation.
• work with a supervisor as a junior (but independent) researcher.

Presentation of completed project

• A written report of approximately 8,000 words
• As a poster presentation (alternative presentations will be considered depending on the project)

Guidelines on the conduct of the project

• Each therapist will have an assigned project supervisor.
• Each therapist will select their topic with their supervisor.
• Each therapist will submit their project proposal to the Faculty Ethics Committee for approval.
• Each therapist will have a minimum of 8 supervisory sessions, with their supervisor.
• Each therapist will submit an electronic and paper copy of their project.
• All projects will be marked by 2 examiners who will be drawn from the approved list of examiners.
• All therapists will present a poster to their colleagues and tutors, after submission of their written report. This will be marked by a panel of examiners.
